Anantnag, Nov 01 (KNO): Police have detained four persons for questioning after miscreants pelted stones at a mosque in the Pehroo Sherbagh area of Anantnag district during Isha prayers on Sunday, officials said.
The incident caused damage to the structure, while some worshippers sustained injuries.
A top official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the incident occurred amid objections raised by some local residents over prayers being offered at the newly constructed mosque.
According to the official, the structure was a house that had been converted into a place of worship, where prayers commenced around a week ago. Some local residents belonging to the Hanafi school of thought had been objecting to the arrangement.
Police said an altercation broke out over the offering of prayers, following which some miscreants pelted stones at the mosque during Isha prayers. A police team immediately reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
Police have registered FIR No. 404/2026 and detained four persons for questioning. Further investigation is underway, officials said.
Police have appealed to people not to give any communal colour to the incident or circulate unverified information, stating that the law-and-order situation remains normal and under control.—(KNO)
